 AAC Consideration for Those on the Autism Spectrum

There is no one-size-fits-all for AAC users with Au
tism. However, there are common
tendencies such as stimming on visual feedback, aud
itory feedback, double tapping,
and home button clicking that get in the way of mea
ningful communication. This
webinar with look at features on the AAC system and
how they can be adjusted so
stimming is less rewarding and in some cases droppe
d completely. The child that
echoes everything the device says may need a differ
ent message than the non-verbal
student. Some children need a video model of conver
sational speech, rather than a
static button. These are features that can be manip
ulated within many of the current
AAC systems on the market today. This population ha
s a lot to say. Let’s help them
get there by making a few simple modifications and
unlocking their world.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn how to:
Defining barriers to functional use of the AAC comm
Adjust settings to address stimming behaviors
Modify the message for those who echo the device
Add video modeling for conversational speech

In the spring of 2017, we surveyed school districts across Washington State to collect information regarding assistive technology service delivery. This endeavor was undertaken as a response to frequently asked questions at regional AT meetings. Information from the survey will be shared with the objective of generating a discussion about current trends in the provision of assistive technology services across our state. Learn about how your fellow AT providers are doing business! The information we will be discussing is meant to be shared with teachers, clinicians, administrators, and other stakeholders in WA state public schools.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Learn about results from a statewide survey of AT services delivery in school districts

  • Discuss local and regional trends in AT service delivery

  • Discuss identified areas that need improvement and ways to take action



Nicky is an SLP and AT specialist in Mount Vernon, WA. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and has served students ages 3-21 in the public schools for the past 10 years. Nicky has previously worked in the medical setting and currently has a small private practice specializing in AAC (alternative augmentative communication) devices and services for adults in the workplace. Special areas of interest include teaming to create customized solutions for people with complex needs and collaborating with local and regional professionals to increase capacity to provide assistive technology devices and services to people across the lifespan in Washington State.
