Hands-on Technical Assistance

Is there a software program or other assistive technology product that you or your school team would like to implement for a student but you don't feel confident enough to jump in and do it? The Special Education Technology Center has a new service that just might help. Now, in addition to technical support via telephone, e-mail or the SETC Forum, you can schedule a face-to-face technical assistance session with a SETC staff member.

This service, called Hands-on Technical Assistance, offers school staff members, parents or students the opportunity to explore the implementation and/or customization of specific software or other AT products according to student or classroom needs. This is not an out-of-the-box training but a client-directed, working session focused on making meaningful application of an AT product - based on your needs!

A Hands-on Technical Assistance may be attended by staff members, family members or students. It is expected that all attending the session will have the same student- or classroom-centered needs in mind and that all will come with a basic understanding of how the technology works. In some cases it may be necessary to take an introductory workshop before attending a called Hands-on Technical Assistance.

These sessions are two hours in length and usually conducted at one of three sites, Ellensburg, Federal Way or Spokane. There is a cost of $150. This fee covers all attendees. Session space will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Session topic is to be determined by the registrant and that topic must be named at the time of registration. See a calendar of currently scheduled session dates and times listed below.

Session topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Training a voice file in NaturallySpeaking
  • Training a voice file in MacSpeech Dictate
  • Creating custom communication boards in Boardmaker
  • Creating custom overlays for the IntelliKeys keyboard
  • Creating or modifying activities in the Classroom Suite
  • Creating literacy supports with SOLO
  • Creating activity grids in Clicker 5, 6
  • Programming certain AAC devices

When you register for a Hands-on Technical Assistance you will be expected to provide the SETC a list of specific product features or functions and/or a list of questions that you want addressed in the session. Again, you must have some basic understanding of the product but by no means do you need to be an expert. The SETC will provide the expertise!

Note: If you need assistance selecting appropriate technology solutions for your student(s) then you should consult with the SETC either informally through e-mail or telephone contact or schedule a formal Technology Collaboration. A Technology Collaboration is also offered on a fee-for-service basis and it includes in the cost, a follow-up Hands-on Technical Assistance.
